The Phases of Movies

I was listening to a podcast recently that referenced the Critical Drinker and the phases of movies. They were simply:

  1. Introduction
  2. Growth
  3. Maturation
  4. Parody

The example covered in the podcast was the Thor movies. While the movies themselves vary in quality, they stick pretty well to these phases.

Consider the latest movies that feature Thor, where he is a bumbling fat version of himself (Endgame) or stripped naked and made fun of (Love and Thunder). The other phases are a bit more obvious, as we can see Thor go from an arrogant god to a slightly less arrogant superhero.

This is true outside the Avengers and Marvel, it really just depends on how long the series goes on; it inevitably will reach parody. Parody also doesn’t need to be funny (see the Stars Wars Prequels), it just has to be an exaggerated imitation of the original, with the intent to be comedic (though the reality might be largely unfunny).

It made think of these phases and how they might apply to things besides films. Like the USA.
