An abbreviated history of 20–21st century computing competition

  • A couple companies design at home computer systems (Apple/Microsoft) and become the tech giants of the future
  • The Web reinvigorates the Internet, making it a necessity for the public and businesses, but also launching the “browser wars
  • An IBM computer can beat a chess grandmaster (AI steps up to bat)
  • Companies that track and control people’s attention become the next big technology companies (Google, Meta)
  • AI re-enters the fray as the mechanism by which content/ads are recommended to people across technology platforms. It also can translate and navigate.
  • OpenAI launches ChatGPT, a Large Language Model (LLM) that shocks the public conscience
  • Microsoft announces a partnership with OpenAI to enhance Bing

OK so why the history lesson?

Computing has always been an arms race. It was used to fight wars/ win battles in the political sphere as well as the economic sphere.

Today is no different. We’re living at a time where so much of our content is recommended to us by AI…
