Why My Wife and I Use Separate Bank Accounts
And Why I Pay Her to Watch Our Kid
This is some possibly controversial advice, but since we’ve been married my wife and I have had separate bank accounts, and I think it’s worked out pretty well.
I’ll share with you why I think it’s actually a GOOD idea to keep things separate.
Should Married People Police Each Other’s Spending?
Heck no.
I didn’t get married so that I could question why my wife took out a certain amount of money from our bank account. Or what clothes she bought with our credit card.
The problem is that certain personality types (mine especially) are highly skeptical. That means I’ll be skeptical of transactions that don’t come from my own brain, no matter what they are. (Meanwhile, I buy a bunch of random junk off of Amazon, hypocrisy!)
The only way for me to not question someone’s transaction is to have no part in it. So my wife has her own credit card and her own bank account. If she spends money using either of those things, I don’t see it and I’m not allowed to see it. As it should be.
But my wife stays home and takes care of our 1.5 year old, so how does she have money to pay for things? Well…
